Donna- Eastenders

How she is represented:

In the first clip we see of Donna she is with Fatboy in the bedroom after a one night stand. Fatboy brings her breakfast and she is shocked. Fatboy says "that's how you should treat a lady" and Donna replies "We all know im not a lady fats", this is suggesting she is taking the mick out of herself. I think Donna does this so no one else can do it for her and she wants to seem strong about it. She also seems to be very sexual towards Fatboy which is suggesting she is going against the stereotype of disabled people not being 'sexual' also suggesting Donna is being presented as a countertype.

In the next clip from Eastenders Fatboy seems to feel awkward or embarrassed about the situation when people start speculating about their night. Donna then looks quite upset about how he is acting about what has happened.

We then see Donna talking to Nancy which ends up quite sour when she says something about Nancy being the perfect pretty blonde girl that most men go for. However, she doesn't realise that Nancy is disabled too and has epilepsy. When they have a conversation in the cafe about it, Donna seems to be very sorry and sympathetic towards Nancy and they are both pictured at the same level to show their equality, this is done by using a mid angle shot.

Donna speaks to one of her friends and they talk to her as if she is a child just because of her disability, when all it really is is a one night stand. If someone without a disability did this no one would make as big of an deal about it. When Donna is looking at Pam she has to look up and Pam looks down to show her power and importance in the clip, this is suggesting Pam is more important or 'the adult'.

Finally when Donna is getting ready for her date with Fatboy she is very excited and looking forward to it until Fatboy lowers the tone. In this scene Donna is presented in many different ways. During this there is up beat music being played in the background which is trying to portray normality or make the scene less awkward being Fatboy and Donna. There is a low angle shot to show Fatboy looking down on her when she falls, however when she tells him to get down he does so they are then on the same level. Then when Fatboy starts saying he likes her as a 'mate not date' there is a high angle shot to show his power over the situation and conversation. Finally even though Fatboy is at a higher angle Donna still has the power over him. I know this because she says 'Come here' and 'Get down' and at the end she tells him to 'Leave'.

I think I have made some good points and used good quotes to back them up but need to use more terminology.

Level 3

Representations of Disability

Game Of Thrones

Areas of representation:
  • Gender
  • Age
  • Ethnicity
  • Sexuality
  • Class and status
  • Disability
  • Regional identity
Gender is presented in game of thrones because males are seen as dominant. This is obvious as the male characters wear coloured bright clothes and outfits while most the women wear rags and dull clothing. There are also many prostitutes in the tv drama suggesting women are objects and are not significant other than being used as sex objects. When the camera is on the female characters is looks down on them and shows the male characters looking down on them to show their dominance over the females.

Age isn't really presented in game of thrones apart from when it comes to class and status with the children which I will explain later.

From what I have watched of Game of thrones ethnicity isn't really represented or shown throughout the episodes.

Sexuality is represented in Game of thrones because a little girl called Arya Stark,  does not want to be a lady, and instead pursues lessons in sword fighting.  She is the youngest daughter of Lord Stark and I think her character is fantastic, and she represents a strong (young) woman whose plot lines have absolutely nothing to do with sexuality or finding romance, but still manages to be just as interesting and even more dynamic.

Most of the male characters are portrayed as extremely sexual and constantly desiring sex, whether it be through rape or by way of prostitutes.  The female characters, however, (with a few exceptions) seem to be classified as either a virgin or a whore; they are either extremely sexual and “easy” or in no way desiring sexual relationships, aside from marriage.  I am sure the fact that the show is set in medieval times has something to do with the portrayal of sexuality, but I feel like the great range of strength and power of the male and female characters is not at all echoed when it comes to their sexual desires and relationships.

Class and status is strongly represented in Game if thrones as lower class people are treated very differently to people of a higher class. For example there are different groups of people showing different classes e.g. the prostitutes, the slaves, the lords, the wise masters etc. These groups are represented very differently. The prostitutes and slaves are dressed in dull robes or short inappropriate clothing. However the lords and wise masters are dressed in fancy expensive outfits to show their higher class and importance. When the lords speak they speak down to the slaves or people of a lower class, treat them like rubbish and look down on them.

Disability is represented in this tv drama as there is a middle aged man named Tyrion. He seems to hide the fact that he is upset and unhappy with his disability throughout the show when finally he admits to this. He says “I’m guilty of being a dwarf,”  with his mouth a grim frown and his faced deeply lined he also says “I’ve been on trial for that my entire life.” This character showing these emotions could suggest disabled people are unhappy and lead a bad life. When Tyrion says this about his disability he shouts as if he is angry for having it and angry for people not understanding and appreciating his struggle.

Regional identity is the main area of representation shown in game of thrones. This is because there are different families from different areas all fighting for the crown. This is showing the different types of regions and identities in the world. For example a few are; The Starks, The Lannisters, The Martells, The Targaryens, The Baratheons etc

All these families are higher class and all want the same thing. The general representation of these regions are;

The Starks: Black hair and green eyes
The Lannisters: Curly blonde hair and green eyes
The Martells: Olive skin, dark hair, dark eyes
The Targaryens: Pale skin, white hair, purple eyes

Overall this tv drama shows how each region and area are different in the way they are and people who live there. It also shows the different ways in which they act and dress.

The Dark Knight Rises-Special effects and edits

Mid-air plane decommissioning

Special effects and edits used-

The sequence was filmed in Scotland. This dark "CIA turboprop" took off from Inverness airport. The sequence was filmed over the Cairngorm Mountains of the Scottish highlands. The only Cairngorms have been described as "Britain's highest mountain range- incredibly cold, incessantly windy and one of the harshest environments" in the British Isles. Perfect, for littering aircraft debris without hitting anyone or anything on the ground.
Airborne, the CIA turboprop is shown being followed by a huge white cargo plane. This is a Lockheed C130 Hercules, of the type used by the United States military. The lumbering C130 an ideal vehicle for a stunt such as this, because its stall speed is as low as 96.5 knots (111 m.p.h); so a camera crew in a helicopter was easily able to match the speeds of the planes and record the exterior action.
For the action going on inside the CIA plane, a simulator was built at studios in Cardington, England; the director could rotate, shake and twist the fuselage while the actors inside tumbled around- almost as if they were weightless.
When the C130 is above the CIA aircraft, its near cargo ramp is lowered and four stuntmen drop down from it, tethered to cables.
At some point here- during a sequence of quick edits- the CIA plane is replaced by a glider mockup that had been towed aloft from the Cairngorm Glider Club in nearby Feshie.

Ex Machina Essay

Ex Machina is a dramatic mystery movie. It is written by a man called Alex Garland who is also the director. This films uk release date is January 21st 2015. This science fiction thriller stars actors and actresses; Alicia Vikander, Domhnall Gleeson, Oscar Isaac and Sonoya Mizuno. Alicia playing Ava, Domhnall playing Caleb, Oscar playing Nathan and Sonoya playing Kyoko. This film tells the story of a programmer who is invited by his employer to administer the Turing test to an android with artificial intelligence. This film had post production work completed at Pinewood Studios by the Pinewood Digital Production Services (DPS) team. Post Production work included colour and data management, onset monitoring and screen services; all completed by Thom Berryman and Luke Moorcock based at Pinewood Studios. Ex Machina was backed by the company film4 productions. Film4 Productions is a British film production company owned by Channel Four Television Corporation. The company has been responsible for backing a large number of films made in the United Kingdom. The company's first production was Walter, directed by Stephen Frears, which was released in 1982. Ex Machina was released in 2015 on the 21st of January in the uk and the 14th in America, it was very successful in both countries. In the opening weekend of ex machina coming out it earnt $250,000 in the US. The film was filMed in three different locations;
Pinewood studios in the UK
Sognefjord in Norway
Valldal, Norway
The exterior shots were filmed in Norway and much of Nathans pad is the Juvet Landscape Hotel in Norway. Most of the interior shots were filmed at Pinewood studios in the UK. This could be because Norway is very well known for scenery and nature, so mountains link to this ideology. This is a good setting for the film to be filmed becauseit’s like a different world so the setting should be quite lonely and peaceful.
There are no known issues or problems that affected this film’s production. When Ex Machina was first released into the cinema it was shown on 4 screens in the US and 8 screens in the Netherlands over the first weekend. The certificate for this film is a 15, this is because of the nudity and adult content shown throughout.
The attracted audience to this film is just about everyone, there is no specific age, gender or personality to be attracted to it. I think the director and producer of this film has thought deeply about the storyline and has picked a perfect piece. It is appealing to younger adults and older adults as it is to do with interesting creative world and things you would never believe could be possible.
When Ex Machina was released it wasn’t expected to do very well in the UK, however it did very well, as i said earlier. Compared to the likes of The hunger games and Fast and Furious 7 Ex Machina was expected to fall behind them however surprisingly made a decent budget.
Even though many people will say Alex Garland must be really clever to have made such an amazing model it would have been made quite easy for him with the CGI standards. In our society it is becoming very easy to make computerised images and this is what the creator of the film has done. Ava is a computer generated image and can be easily created; this would suggest the film being easier to produce than thought.
Overall the reviews from Ex Machina have been very positive, here are some examples:
“Garland the writer may be a bit too fiddly about the details of what we're seeing, but his visual flair is undeniable. He also shows an ability to handle his actors. It all makes Ex Machina into a tantalizing debut and an arresting piece of [sci-fi].”
A beautiful piece of science fiction on par with the best of the genre.
“It is a gorgeous, thought-provoking story and a triumph in every way for Garland, who casts three rising stars to make a small film full of big ideas.

However some negative:
The story ends in a muddled rush, leaving many unanswered questions. Like a newly launched high-end smartphone, Ex Machina looks cool and sleek, but ultimately proves flimsy and underpowered. Still, for dystopian future-shock fans who can look beyond its basic design flaws, Garland’s feature debut functions just fine as superior pulp sci-fi.
“Vikander’s spellbinding, not-quite-human presence (her synthetic skin is silky yet creepy) keeps us watching. But an only-too-obvious ‘twist’ and some clunky plotting...drain much of the credibility from a story which promised so much.

“It's a theme Mary Shelley brought us in "Frankenstein," which was first published in 1818. That was almost 200 years ago. And while Ex Machina replaces the stitches and neck bolts with gears and fiber-optics, it all feels an awful lot like the same story.

Male and female gaze

The male gaze:

This is the way in which men look at women. The male gaze also denies women human identity and are seen as objects. Normally the actresses in films and TV dramas never really have importance themselves, they are just there to make the men happy. Male gaze leads to hegemonic ideologies in our society- the idea of dominance in political and social contexts.

The female gaze:

The Female Gaze is a Gaze trope about the way a work is presented as from a female perspective or reflects female attitudes, either because of the creator's gender or because it is deliberately aimed at a female audience. There are arguments that there is no such thing and that it isn't equivalent to the male gaze.

Do i agree with these theories?

I agree with the idea of male gaze as a lot of women nowadays are objectified. Women have nearly always been viewed in this light and the situation has just increased as years have gone by. Taking Grease as an example...

Sandy looks quite worried as Danny has just tried to touch her suggesting she is 'easy'. He is also very sexual towards her and she is quite took back.

This photo is also from Grease which shows Putzie looking up the dresses of the girls. He is demonstrating the male gaze completely as he is seeing the women as objects and suggesting the women are 'irrelevant' in the film.
I also agree with the theory of the female gaze as most women see men as hope they want to be seen e.g. Strong, Muscular, Powerful and Wealthy. Because of this, the question of the female gaze's existence is questionable as it is more of a male gaze through a woman's perspective.

Gender

Definition of Gender

Male or Female. Gender refers to the socially constructed roles, behaviours, activities and attributes that are given as what society considers appropriate for men and women.

Masculinity:

  • Power
  • Toughness
  • Manly
  • Courage
Masculinity is normally shown with muscles being defined and there being s sense of power or dominance with the way the are standing or positioned.

Femininity:
  • Beauty
  • Caring
  • Sensitive
  • Maternity
Femininity is normally shown with provocative behaviour or actions. It is also shown with not much clothing or a lot of makeup, defining the eyes and lips.

How is gender represented?

In this shot from the TV drama Spooks male dominance/ power is presented. This is shown by the male characters being placed towards the front of the shot and they are stood up to show their power when the two women are sat down or stood towards the back of the room. The character at the computer is also male which is where all the other characters seem to be looking, this could suggest that males have more knowledge and ability to do these things or work it out.

In this shot from the TV drama Happy valley gender isn't represented that strongly. Both females look equal in this shot and are neither seen as 'more important' or 'dominant'. Femininity is presented as the female on the left looks very sympathetic and caring towards the policewomen. She looks like she could be trying to help her or support her. However the other side of femininity e.g. makeup/little amount of clothing inst shown.
